IN CASE OF EMERGENCY...
Do not come to the school until you are notified.
When Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement respond to the school for any type of emergency, personnel are required to follow a series of protocols including detailed attendance of each student. Driving to the school early means you may get in the way of emergency vehicle traffic and the ability of emergency crews to respond to the scene. The school will not be able to release students until Law Enforcement renders the building safe. Once appropriate, the school district will notify families via Text/Email/Phone alerts when and how they can be reunited with their students. Please follow the guidance below for more information.
Parent Instructions
- Bring a valid photo ID to the reunification site.
- Be patient – the process ensures a safe and accountable release of students.
- Check in based on the first letter of your child’s last name.
- Complete a Reunification Card for each student (cards are perforated and separated during the process).
- A staff “runner” will retrieve your child and bring them to you.
- In some cases, parents may be invited inside for additional information.
Special Situations
- If a parent/guardian cannot pick up the student, only pre-approved emergency contacts can do so.
- If a student drove to school, they may not be allowed to leave with their vehicle.
- In certain cases, high school students may be released independently.
- Law enforcement may request interviews or provide medical/emergency updates if necessary.

The Wayne Central School District routinely works with students and staff members on prevention. The District provides support programs and services for students and staff including counselors, psychologists, social workers and other specialized mental health professionals. The District also supports a variety of community partnerships with mental health and police agencies to offer continued support and to enhance safety and security.
In January 2024, the District formed a Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). The purpose of the team is to identify potential threats and to assist students and staff members who are struggling and in need of support. WCSD leads the team in partnership with Wayne behavioral health and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The team’s philosophy is based on a restorative approach to prevent acts of targeted violence, which balances the safety needs of the school community with the health and wellness of the person at-risk for committing an act of violence against themselves or others. In each case, the team follows a set protocol to identify and discuss the needs of each individual and to collectively determine appropriate next steps and interventions to address their concerns before they escalate to the level of potential self-harm or harm to others.

The safety of our students and school staff is paramount at the Wayne Central School District. One of the ways we stay safe is by conducting school safety drills.
Before we practice a drill, we teach students and staff what they need to do. We talk about how the drill will be announced and and we always inform Students and Staff that it is a Drill.
After the Drill, students and families are encouraged to ask questions. Below are resources to help you talk to your children.
If you have any questions about Drills or other safety concerns, please contact the Director of Safety & Security, Travis Andrews at (315-524-1255)
SAFETY DRILLS AT WCSD
Q: What do Safety Drills look like at WCSD?
A: The Wayne Central School District adopted 'Standard Response Protocols' (SRP) The SRP is the is action-based, flexible, and easy to learn. It rationally organizes tactics for response to weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to personal safety. SRP info for Families
Q: Why does WCSD have to conduct Safety Drills?
A: The New York State Education Department mandates that, each school year, NYS public schools conduct at least:
- (8) Evacuation Drills
- (4) Lockdown Drills
- (1) Emergency Dismissal Drill
Q: Are drills scary or traumatizing for my child?
A: Not at all! WCSD districts, educators, first responders, and safety team members are fully trained in best practices while conducting drills utilizing a trauma-informed approach. Our K-12 Counseling Team is made up of TIG-trained School Counselors and Social Workers that also serve on each building-level safety team and advise on drill protocol. Additionally, effective July 31st, 2024 amendments to the Commissioner's Regulations §155.17 affirms that all drills moving forward must exercise that same approach.
Q: What are Trauma-Informed Drills?
A: the NYS Education Department has the following definitions
TRAUMA
Trauma means an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience such as, but not limited to, an act of violence, natural disaster, abuse, neglect, or loss.
TRAUMA-INFORMED
Trauma-informed means an understanding of what trauma is and how it affects the physical, emotional, and mental health of students and adults.
TRAUMA-INFORMED DRILLS
Trauma-informed drills means avoiding tactics in training or drills that may introduce or activate prior trauma, such as use of props, actors, simulations, or other tactics intended to mimic a school shooting, incident of violence, or other emergency, or inclusion of developmentally or age-inappropriate content; and to recognize that drills may inadvertently prompt a negative emotional or psychological response in staff or students because of previous exposure(s) to trauma
Trauma-informed Drills avoid tactics in training or drills that may introduce or activate prior trauma, such as use of props, actors, simulations. Trauma-informed Drills avoid other tactics intended to mimic a school shooting, incident of violence, or other emergency.
In Trauma-informed drill practices, we:
- Announce Drills by informing students and staff at the time a drill occurs that it is a drill (not required for evacuation drills).
- Notify Families in advance of drill(s) that they will occur. Parental notification is now required for all drills (including evacuation drills).
- Provide supports for students and/or staff as necessary.
- After the drill, encourage our staff to discuss with our students: What went well? What could have been done differently? How did it feel?
