Welcome to the Academics Department

A joyful boy in a green shirt runs towards the camera in a bustling gym, surrounded by other children playing and wearing casual clothes.

A young man kneels on a classroom floor, smiling as he hugs a golden retriever. The dog wears a collar, calm and content. The room appears bright and welcoming.

The Wayne Central School District is committed to providing each student with a comprehensive educational experience that is both rigorous and relevant. Further, we take seriously our role in the development of the whole child. Toward that end we provide appropriately challenging academic programs coupled with rich character development experiences. Support and scaffolding are an integral component of our program and are provided to assist students in meeting expectations and reaching their full potential.

Our academic program consistently ranks among the top districts. From kindergarten through twelfth grade we are constantly evaluating the outcomes and experiences of our students. At the primary level we recognize the importance of developing foundation literacy and numeracy skills and focus great time and resource in this area. At the elementary level we reinforce and extend these skills. At the middle level we expect students to take on more responsibility for their learning and apply what they know to new and novel settings. Our high school level provides a great deal of choice to our students in terms of electives and programs while continuing to develop higher level thinking skills and learning attributes in our students.

We understand that not all learning occurs in a traditional classroom. Students who participate and connect to their school outside of the classroom tend to perform better academically. Character education, music and arts, athletics and clubs for example also play an important role in the development of the whole child. Character is taught and recognized throughout our district with programs and experiences designed to promote healthy choices and a considerate attitude. Students have extracurricular opportunities that begin at the elementary level with chorus, intramurals, and clubs. As students progress through our program so, too, do their opportunities.

Of course all of this depends on a highly qualified staff. The Wayne Central School District has a staff that is second to none. Our administrators are dedicated to providing their staffs with the support and direction required. Our teachers and support staff are committed to continuous improvement and take seriously their responsibility to reach and teach every student. The Office of Academics is here to provide support and direction to ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessment work seamlessly to maximize student achievement and experience.
