Wayne Elementary Launches First-Ever Invisible Forces Science Days

For the first time ever, third-grade students at Wayne Elementary participated in Invisible Forces Science Days, an exciting three-day learning experience that brings science concepts to life through hands-on exploration.
Created by Wayne Elementary's third-grade teachers in collaboration with District Science Coordinator Jeff Ugine, the event immersed students in the study of invisible forces through eight interactive learning stations. Throughout the experience, students investigated scientific concepts including forces, gravity, friction, pendulums, magnetism, static electricity, and trick shots, all while applying their learning through engaging experiments and challenges.
Each station allowed students to explore invisible forces impacting everyday life. A popular activity used magnets to move a car around a racetrack, highlighting the push-and-pull principles of magnetism.
According to Instructional Team Leader Shari Hurny, “It was wonderful to see the students so engaged with their learning and the perseverance they demonstrated when getting the forces to work.”
The culminating activity of the event brought students together to design and build their own Rube Goldberg machines, requiring teamwork, creativity, and an understanding of the scientific concepts they had explored throughout the week. Cheers echoed down the hallways as students successfully completed their chain-reaction creations.
In addition to supporting the third-grade invisible forces science unit, Invisible Forces Science Days enabled students to demonstrate a concrete understanding of scientific principles, communicate their learning effectively, and collaborate with classmates on complex challenges. These experiences created lasting memories, inspired curiosity, and showed measurable growth in science comprehension. The event was a tremendous success, providing students with practical skills like problem-solving and teamwork while reinforcing the excitement of learning through exploration.
Wayne Elementary looks forward to building on the success of this first-ever event and continuing to create innovative learning experiences that spark excitement for science.
