High School Students Bring Residential Designs to Life Through Innovative Engineering Project

Wayne Central High School students in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Civil Engineering & Architecture class are turning imagination into reality through an engaging, hands-on residential design project.
As part of the course, students designed custom homes using Autodesk Revit, developing detailed computer-aided design (CAD) drawings that met real-world architectural standards. The projects then advanced beyond the digital stage, as students used Onshape and Bambu Studio to convert their designs into precise 3D-printed models.
Taking their work a step further, students incorporated electrical elements by wiring LED lighting into their models, bringing their miniature homes to life. Each project was completed with thoughtfully designed landscapes that highlighted not only technical skills but also creativity and attention to detail.
This comprehensive project provided students with valuable experience across multiple disciplines, including architecture, engineering, design, and emerging technologies such as 3D printing.
The project demonstrates students’ application of design, engineering, and technical skills through a multi-step, hands-on process. It also highlights how the PLTW program provides structured opportunities for students to engage with tools and concepts commonly used in STEM-related fields.
